Could an AI tutor help a student at the moment they need it the most?

We asked for 20 to 40 students

Two weeks before the O-Level and A-Level exams in Singapore, we posted once on r/SGExams. We offered a revision course in O-Level English or A-Level General Paper, self-paced, with instant feedback, and said we could probably take 20 to 40 students.

114 joined

In early October, 114 students joined. By 24 October they had 447 study sessions between them and had answered 2,324 questions.

They studied late into the night

Zippy marked their writing as they went. A student could hand in a whole essay and have it marked criterion by criterion, in seconds.

Illustrative: a demo student's essay on a demo account. Run 1 students' own work is not shown.

When it got stressful, they played games

Between lessons, students played the daily word game and spent the points they had earned on stickers.

In their own words

After the first day, one A-Level student wrote to us:

i read through the first day's lessons and found them rlly rlly helpful. as someone who has been worrying for gp paper 1, it helps me to become more confident and motivated to study for p1. thank u so much!!!

We asked in the course's group chat how useful the course had been for their revision. 74% of the 23 students who answered said it was useful. They asked for more model answers and other school subjects.

74% found it useful for revision

More is coming

Run 1 was English. Zippy now teaches more, in a fun and interactive way:

  • Maths, physics and programming. Change the ramp and watch where the ball stops, set a line and see the graph move, or fill in a Python loop, with feedback on every answer.
  • Oral lessons. Answer out loud, and Zippy scores your pronunciation and fluency from your voice, and your content and language from what you said.
  • Help at any hour. When you're stuck, ask Zippy about the exact question you're on, then try it again.
  • What to practise next. As you learn, Zippy learns your strengths and the skills you still need, measured against your curriculum.
  • Your teacher has the final say. Zippy drafts the marking, and a teacher can review every mark, change it and write back. When they do, you'll know.
  • iPhone and Android. Learn wherever you study, on our apps or in any browser.
