A model answer

The Guptas ruled north India from about the fourth to the sixth century CE. The Cholas dominated the south from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Both left lasting marks on Indian culture.

Gupta period

  • Architecture: early structural temples, such as the Dashavatara temple at Deogarh, began the Nagara tradition.
  • Sculpture: the seated Buddha from Sarnath set a standard for calm, balanced figures.
  • Metallurgy: the iron pillar at Mehrauli has resisted rust for about 1,600 years.
  • Literature and science: Kalidasa wrote Abhijnanashakuntalam in Sanskrit. Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiya in 499 CE, using place-value arithmetic.
  • Learning: Nalanda began under Gupta patronage.

Chola period

  • Architecture: Rajaraja I completed the Brihadeeswara temple at Thanjavur in 1010. Its vimana rises about 66 metres. It is part of the Great Living Chola Temples World Heritage Site, with Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram.
  • Bronze: Nataraja figures cast by the lost-wax method are still made in Swamimalai.
  • Local government: the Uttaramerur inscriptions of the tenth century record how village assemblies chose members by lot.
  • Maritime culture: Rajendra I's naval expedition to Srivijaya in 1025 spread Indian influence in Southeast Asia.
  • Literature: Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam and Kamban's Ramayana belong to this era.

Conclusion

The Guptas began the structural temple and set classical standards in art and learning. The Cholas carried temple building and bronze casting to their height in the Dravida style.

Why this answer works. It gives each period equal space. Every point names a monument, a text, a person or an inscription. The conclusion links the two.

Where it could be stronger. It could use the same fields for both periods, so the comparison is easier to see.
