PSLE Comprehension Cloze Practice (with answers and reasons)

These practice passages help your child with comprehension cloze in PSLE English Paper 2, Booklet B. Each answer comes with the clue that gives it away.

What your child has to do

Each blank in the passage has one best answer. There are no options to choose from. Your child writes one word in each blank.

The clue is almost always in the words around the blank. These practice passages work the same way as the exam.

How to find the answer

Your child should read the whole sentence before filling a blank. Often they need to read the whole paragraph.

The clue could be:

  • a linking word before the blank
  • an example after the blank
  • the tense of the verbs nearby

Some children fill blanks from left to right without reading ahead. They lose marks they could easily have kept.

How the answer keys work

For each blank, we give the answer and the reason. The reason names the clue. Over time, your child starts to spot these clues without help.

Blank (3): because. The sentence explains why the plants died. So the blank needs a word that gives a reason.

Copying the answer teaches very little. Understanding the clue is what helps in the real exam.

How to use these with your child

  3. Look closely at the blanks they missed. Usually they filled the blank without reading past it.
