Two mistakes that lose the most marks

Words between the subject and the verb

"The pile of old newspapers ___ to be recycled."

The subject is "the pile", not "newspapers". Cover up the middle phrase, then choose the verb. This fixes most agreement mistakes.

Choosing what sounds right

Many children pick the option that sounds right. They do not check the time words in the sentence.

Words like "yesterday", "since 2015" and "by the time" decide the tense. Look for them first.

How to use these with your child

  1. Do a full set in one sitting. Do not check answers along the way.
  2. Mark it together. For each mistake, ask "which rule was this testing?" before reading the explanation.
  3. Keep a short list of the rules that keep coming up. Usually 3 or 4 rules cause most lost marks.
